Surface Dressing Programme - 2021
Shropshire Council and Keir are planning to carry out road improvements on this road using surface dressing. You’ve probably seen that they have already been working to prepare the road for the improvements. This will be done with a full road closure of Stiperstones to Plox Green.
When will this work take place?
The work will take place between the 18th - 20th July 2021. To minimise disruption, we’ll work during the day (9:30am-14:45pm) Please note that all our planned roadworks are subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Any changes will be displayed on the yellow advanced warning signs.
Following the surface dressing we will return to undertake white lining on the 5th - 9th August 2021. As mentioned, our work is dependent on weather so these dates could change, but any changes will be displayed via the signage and on https://one.network/
How will this affect traffic?
Signs will be erected in the street/road prior before starting the works and the work will be completed as quickly as possible. A fully signed diversion route will be in place whilst work is carried out. This can be found on https://one.network/ by referencing 34800952
Will there be access to my property/business?
We will have staff on site who are able to assist with access. Our priority is to keep you and our staff safe, this means that there may be a bit of a wait while we make the site safe for you to travel through to your property.
During the closure access to the works area will be restricted to:
·Essential Highway Personnel,
·Local residents who live and reside within the road closure,
·Businesses located within the closure (if applicable),
·Pedestrians, dismounted cyclists and equestrians,
·Emergency service vehicles
How long will the work take?
Surface dressing is usually completed at each site within a day. Periodic sweeping continues for approximately one month, followed by the replacement of any lining and cat’s eyes.
How can you help us?
It would be appreciated if you could ensure vehicles are not parked on the road during the day whilst the work is in progress. Should this cause any problems or concerns then please do not hesitate to call the number below or alternatively speak to our team on site to allow arrangements to be put in place.
You can help us by following this advice:
·Please keep children away from the works to ensure their safety.
·Please drive appropriately through the works.
·Check your shoes before entering your property or car to make sure there is no bitumen from the works. (Tar remover can help with the removal of accidental tar)
Why have you chosen this road? Why can’t it just be resurfaced?
Surface dressing is a quick and cost-effective way of improving the road surface and reducing the rate at which a road deteriorates by sealing the road to prevent water ingress, which is a major factor in road deterioration and potholes. Whilst other roads requiring more extensive treatments will be left until treatment can be prioritised for funding.
Surface dressing is most effective when used for preventative maintenance and applied just before the onset of major deterioration; therefore, we may be treating some roads that appear not to require attention while there may be other roads in the local area that are in a worse condition.
If roads did not benefit from preventative surface dressing maintenance, they would require replacement three or four times as often. Resurfacing roads causes increased traffic congestion and is much more expensive (up to 5 times more costly per sqm) and time consuming.
What is the benefit of surface dressing?
Surface dressing is extremely cost effective and avoids the need for more costly repairs in the future and thus, forms a crucial element of our long-term maintenance strategy. In 2020 we dressed around 300 miles of road stopping them deteriorating to a poor condition.
